On the air in a soap opera, Thiago Fragoso wants to take the next steps in music
With nearly 30 years of career, Thiago Fragoso collects roles on television, but it is in music that he wants to take his next steps. The actor is preparing for the release of his first EP, which will be mainly produced from his compositions. In a conversation with GQ Brasil, he says that we live in a very tough judgment dynamic. “Doing what you love and chasing your dreams becomes more and more imperative as time goes by”, he says.
Thiago sustenta o amor pela música desde cedo, mas foi na atuação que construiu seus pilares. Agora, ele precisa sThiago maintains his love for music from an early age, but it was in his acting that he built his pillars. Now, he needs to reinvent himself for this new market. That desire slumbered inside him, until the passion awoke with his participation in the ”PopStar” show, in 2017. Now, he devotes much of his time to his first musical project, when he doesn’t have to take care of Martin, his youngest son, who recently turned 1 year old.
“O Martin nasceu com um mês de pandemia. A gente via o povo ficando total fitness, se iluminando com práticas de “Martin was born with a month of pandemic. We saw people getting totally fit, enlightening themselves with meditation practices, doing online graduations and post graduations, and we only had space to take care of the newborn”, he joked. Alongside Mariana Vaz, the couple is also the father of 10-year-old Benjamin.
In a chat about the pandemic recordings, details of the musical project and life with her two children, check out the full interview below:
What can you say about your new EP? Will it be made only of your compositions?
I can’t say much because we are still developing the entire project, which ended up undergoing adaptations due to the pandemic. About the compositions, it won’t be only my compositions, it will also feature a very heavy version of Podres Poderes do Caetano and there’s a song by my brother. The other three tracks are entirely mine, lyrics and music.
Do we already have a release forecast?
we’re still trying to associate it with the freedom to do a launch show, you know? This pandemic was especially hard on art… Our profession almost always involves crowding.
With so many years of success in the performing arts, where did the impetus come from to take a chance on music?
When you think you’ve done enough, there’s something weird, right? It is the nature of humanity to always be in the process of overcoming. I’ve done a lot in my life, yes, and there comes an age where the importance of turning on the “fuck****” becomes paramount. We live in a dynamic of demands and judgments that are very inclement and hard. Doing what you love and chasing your dreams becomes more and more imperative as time goes by. That’s how I see it all.
How has your wife, Mari, been helping you in this process? Is she always the first to hear your songs? Does she have an opinion in the compositions?
She’s the first to hear it but I actually only show it when it’s ready (laughs).
If in “Salve-se Quem Puder” you lived a romance with the character of Vitória Strada, in real life you became super friends, sharing several fun moments on social networks. Do you think this good relationship helped in the story of the small screens?
I think so! Mainly because it’s a super screwy comedy, right? I think it’s very important to keep a light atmosphere behind the scenes, I invest in this in all my works. Vitoria is a love and we used to laugh a lot… There were scenes that we had to do looking at each other’s ears so as not to have a crisis of laughter.
How was recording during the pandemic?
At first, it was kind of surreal, right? It felt like I was getting into that bubble the federal agents make at Elliot’s house to contain any ET infections! Remember that? The feeling was the same… Everyone dressed in a white jumpsuit, mask and face shield. Globo demarcated perimeters and you only had access to what was strictly necessary. After a few days it got calmer. Even the most different things, like having to do your own characterization, were incorporated. And, of course, when it ended, it was sad. I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to work during the pandemic. I think I would be a lot more saturated with all the isolation if it weren’t for that.
Overall, how has the pandemic impacted your work? Did you manage to produce something from home, in that sense?
So, for us here at home it was pretty crazy because Martin was born with a month of pandemic. We saw people getting total fitness, enlightening themselves with meditation practices, doing online graduations and post graduations, and we only had space to take care of the newborn (laughs), mainly because for a long time we didn’t have anyone with us … Not grandmas, not nannies, nothing… But now we’re getting into this wave of reinventing ourselves in the pandemic. We are taking some online script courses and developing some projects. This has been great to break out of this monophasic pandemic tone.
Benjamin is already 10 years old, right? Does he already show any interest in theater or the arts?
Benjamin, like any good Aquarius, shows interest in almost everything (laughs). He has already said he wanted to be a musician (apart from an astronaut, veterinarian, paleontologist, pilot, scientist and clown), but an actor he never said.
How does it feel to watch Dad on TV? With “Save yourself who can”?
It is the first soap opera he is allowed to watch. He’s loving it… It’s going to be the biggest soap opera. It’s funny because he respects the fourth wall, just fine. When he says something he only talks about Alan, he never mentioned “Daddy”.
And how has it been taking care of Martin at home? He was born during the pandemic and saw little of the streets.
Very little. He walks through the condo, alone. His one-year party was just with the godparents and two cousins. No grandma, grandpa… Bisa… Nothing like that. Everyone suffers from this situation. Now that grandparents and Bisa have been vaccinated I think it will be a very welcome change… Everyone is happy with a chubby baby around.
Are you and Mari thinking about having more children?
Not for now! It is still forbidden to talk about this subject here at home (laughs). But the future belongs to God, right?
